Why Aluminum and Heavy-Duty Panels Are Now Worth Repairing
Collision work is swinging back toward repair, and the panels that used to get scrapped without a second thought are now being brought back into shape on the shop floor. Aluminum body sections and big heavy-duty panels that once meant an automatic order for a replacement part are becoming candidates for actual repair, thanks to glue pull methods, lateral tension tools, and modular pulling systems that did not exist in practical form a few years ago. After enough years pulling dents and replacing quarter panels myself, I can tell you the shift is real, and it changes what a customer can expect when their vehicle rolls in damaged.
Chris White, president of KECO, put it plainly at the HD Repair Forum, describing a pendulum swinging from replace back to repair. Larger MSOs are leaning harder into repairability. Shops are changing how they size up damage in the first place. And equipment makers are building tools aimed at expanding what can be fixed rather than what has to be cut off and thrown away.
What Is Changing on Aluminum and HD Panels
Material is driving the whole conversation. Aluminum is everywhere now, on passenger cars and heavy trucks alike, and it does not behave like steel under a dent puller. As White said, there is so much aluminum and fixing it is difficult. Glue pull repair works with the metal instead of fighting it. Tabs are glued to the outside, the panel is drawn back into form, and nobody has to grind material away or get behind the panel to do it. That means cab corners, quarter panels, and wide aluminum sections can come back without disturbing the backside.
Heavy-duty vehicles add sheer scale to the job. Bigger panels, thicker metal, and tight access points make full teardown a real cost. Lateral tension tools spread the pull across the whole damaged area first, restoring balance before a technician ever chases a specific low spot. Tabs go across the affected zone, tension pulls in several directions, and the panel responds as a unit. On a 50-inch panel, you cannot just pull a little at a time, so linking multiple tabs and lifting the whole section at once keeps the metal moving in a controlled way. White described tower capability rated at 1,200 pounds at eight feet in the air, which is what it takes to reach cab backs and upper structures without repositioning the truck.
Why This Matters to an AW Collision Customer
Here is where it hits home for the person waiting on their vehicle. Every panel a shop can repair is a panel that does not depend on a part that might be backordered, stuck in shipping, or simply unavailable. Repair keeps the work inside the building. The technician stays with the vehicle, the job moves from one stage to the next, and the schedule stops living and dying by the supply chain. As White noted, repairing more helps with throughput, and throughput is really just a fancy word for how fast we can safely get your vehicle back to you.

That skillset is the other half of the story. All the tooling in the world does nothing if the hands using it cannot read how a panel holds tension. Rebuilding that ability takes training and reps. White summed up the learning curve well, calling it not hard, just a little bit different. Shops that invest in their people, in his words invest in your guys, get more panels restored, cleaner results, and faster jobs. On a heavy-duty repair, where one truck eats up floor space and labor for days, that difference shows up directly in cost and turnaround.
