More Aluminum and Heavy-Duty Damage Is Now Repairable, Not Replaceable
Collision repair is quietly shifting back toward its own name. For years the answer to a damaged panel was to order a new one and bolt it on. That is changing fast, and the change is being driven by better tools, new materials, and technicians relearning how to actually fix metal. Chris White, president of KECO, put it plainly at the HD Repair Forum when he said he feels the market pendulum swinging from replace back to repair. After 45 years on the floor, I can tell you that swing is real, and it is showing up on cars, trucks, and big commercial rigs alike.
The push is coming from the top down. Larger multi-shop operators are leaning harder on repairability, shops are rethinking how they write damage, and equipment makers are building tools aimed at expanding what can be saved rather than what has to be tossed. Material composition is a big part of the story. Aluminum is everywhere now, on passenger vehicles and heavy-duty units alike, and it does not behave like the steel most of us cut our teeth on. As White said, there is so much aluminum, and fixing aluminum is difficult.
What Is Actually Changing on the Floor
Glue pull repair is the method doing most of the heavy lifting. It works with aluminum instead of fighting it. Tabs are glued to the outside of the panel and tension is applied, so a technician can bring a cab corner, a quarter panel, or a large aluminum section back into shape without removing material or ever touching the backside. On heavy-duty vehicles that matters even more, because you are dealing with bigger panels, thicker material, and tight access points where full teardown is a nightmare.
Lateral tension tools take it a step further. Damage does more than leave a dent, it changes how the whole panel holds tension. So technicians set tabs across the entire affected area, pull in several directions at once, and let the panel respond as a unit before chasing individual low spots. The reach has scaled up too. White described tower capability built for HD work at 1,200 pounds of pull, eight feet in the air, which lets a tech work cab backs and upper structures without repositioning the vehicle.

The obvious benefit is your original panels stay on your vehicle. Factory metal that is straightened correctly keeps its original corrosion protection and fit, and it avoids the alignment headaches that can come with a replacement panel. The bigger, quieter benefit is throughput. As White noted, repairing more helps with throughput because the work stops depending on parts that are backordered or stuck on a truck somewhere.
If an entire panel is 50 inches wide, you can't just pull it a little bit at a time.
When the job stays inside the shop, it keeps moving. No waiting three weeks for a quarter panel from a warehouse two states away. For heavy-duty and fleet owners that is huge, because a truck sitting in a bay is a truck not earning money. Wide-panel repairs get handled by linking multiple tabs and lifting the section as one controlled unit, and modular tooling lets a tech match the setup to the exact damage.
What It Means for You
None of this works without the person holding the tool. White is blunt that a skillset left collision during all the replace years, and he is right. Rebuilding it means reading panel movement, sequencing pulls, and staying patient. As he said, it is not hard, it is just a little bit different. The shops getting real results are the ones investing in training, not just equipment. When you bring your vehicle in, that combination of the right tools and a trained hand is what gets your original panels back to form and gets you back on the road sooner.
