Building a Safety Program That Actually Holds Up in Your Shop
Every collision shop and every training classroom needs a written safety program, not a vague understanding that everybody will be careful. A real program spells out mandatory procedures and teaches best practices across every hazard in the building, from protective gear and first aid to fire safety and the split of responsibility between the employer and the person turning the wrench. Without that structure, things slip, and in this trade a slip can end a career or a life.
Most of us know the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, formed to protect working men and women by setting and enforcing standards. Their documentation is blunt about how safety actually gets done, calling for the cooperative efforts of both employers and employees. That is the whole game. The employer performs a hazard assessment, identifies and provides the right personal protective equipment, trains people on it, maintains and replaces it, and reviews the program on a schedule. The employee wears the PPE properly, shows up for training, cares for the gear, and speaks up when something needs to be repaired or replaced.
Getting the Right Gear on the Right Person
OSHA requires much of your PPE to meet or equal the standards set by the American National Standards Institute, ANSI. That applies to eye and face protection, head protection, and foot protection, and it applies whether the shop bought the gear or the technician did. Eye and face protection has to be worn any time a worker faces flying objects, liquid chemicals, acids, gases, or light radiation, which covers most of what happens in a bay. Every excuse you have heard, it fits poorly, it fogs, it will not go over eyeglasses, has an answer. Safety glasses that fit over prescription lenses exist. Keep two styles on hand, a close-fitting pair for those without glasses and a larger pair for those who wear them, and stop treating a bay like a fashion show.
Hearing protection depends on how loud the noise is in decibels, how long it lasts, and how many sources you have running. A body shop is never quiet, but the real danger is the short, sharp job: an air hammer, a car running without exhaust, or seating a tire bead. Locate reciprocating compressors in a separate room, and understand that newer compressors and air tools are engineered to run quieter. Keep both disposable plugs and earmuffs available, since muffs go on and come off fast for those quick bursts.
Gloves come down to the job. Nitrile holds up better than latex against oils and chemicals while keeping good dexterity, but neither lasts long. Chemical-resistant gloves belong at the solvent tank, welding gloves at the welder, and mechanics gloves earn their keep because the padding cuts the vibration and impact that wear out hands and wrists over the years.
Fire, First Aid, and Working as a Team
Fire is the most frightening thing that can happen in a shop full of flammable liquids and ignition sources, and the difference between a contained fire and a disaster is measured in seconds. Inspect your extinguishers, train your people, and call your local fire department to ask about demonstrations. Do not assume everyone knows how to use an extinguisher, because plenty of folks freeze. A properly stocked first aid kit is an OSHA requirement, and in an industry where cuts and abrasions are routine, those supplies get used. Get base-level training in place, name a lead who stays calm when panic sets in, and make CPR, the Heimlich, and AED use part of what your crew is ready for.
The cooperative efforts of both employers and employees will help in establishing and maintaining a safe and healthful work environment.
Make it mandatory for anyone about to run a loud tool or procedure to call it out loud, giving coworkers time to get their hearing protection on. Friendly reminders between technicians police the program better than any poster on the wall.
EV and Lift Safety, Where the Stakes Climb
Electric vehicles changed the conversation, because the high voltage and amperage can kill. Cordon off the work area with cones, barrier chain or tape, and warning signs. Keep an insulated rescue pole on hand to pull a technician clear of a live source. Wear high-voltage insulated gloves, inspect them for tears and leaks before every use, and document their recertification where they are stored. Use non-conductive tools and a multimeter rated to CAT III, because the wrong meter risks an arc blast, not just a ruined tool. When in doubt, stop and follow the manufacturer's procedure.
Lifts get taken for granted fastest of all. Train on them regularly, and lean on the Automotive Lift Institute for guidance. An EV needs a lift rated for the added weight, with arms and pads that reach the correct points, since the battery often forms the entire floor pan. Special lift tables exist for pulling those heavy packs.
