It's Geometry: Why Alignment Comes Before ADAS Calibration
The cameras and radar units that steer your car away from a lane line or slam the brakes before you hit something ahead do not work in a vacuum. They work off of geometry, and if the vehicle underneath them is not aligned correctly, they aim wrong and behave wrong. That single fact is why wheel alignment has to be verified before any ADAS calibration is signed off, and why skipping that step turns a good repair into a liability.
Consider a recent manufacturer recall issued because a front camera's software was reading too sensitive, which threw off the automatic emergency braking. That case shows exactly how a vehicle interprets the data coming off its sensors and reacts to it. A small error in what the sensor sees becomes a big error in what the car does. Forty five years on the frame rack and in the booth taught me that a system is only as good as the reference points it is built on, and on a modern car those reference points are the centerline and thrust angle of the chassis itself.
What's Actually Changing Under the Car
ADAS sensors align to the geometric centerline and thrust angle of the vehicle. Establishing that centerline is the base of nearly every calibration, which tells you just how much structural alignment matters. The thrust angle sets the direction the car actually drives down the road, and the steering angle sensor reports where the driver is pointing the wheel. Those systems are completely interdependent. Knock one out of spec and the rest start lying to each other.
You have probably heard of a car that dog-tracks, where the driver has to hold a constant turn on the wheel just to go straight. That car may still travel down the road in a line, but its sensors are aimed wrong. It does not take much. A change in toe, or an issue that shows up when you check SAI (steering axis inclination) and IA (included angle), is enough to throw ADAS performance off.
When the suspension alignment is off, the steering wheel angle sensor reads as though the driver is actively turning even when the car is tracking straight. That false input changes how the vehicle reacts to hazards. Lane departure, lane keep assist, and AEB can send false signals or fail to respond, misreading oncoming traffic or the roadway when the driver needs help most.

Most drivers experience a miscalibrated system as a nuisance first. The car nudges when it should not, or does not correct when it should. Over time that builds mistrust of the safety features, when the real problem is improper repair or calibration. The annoyance becomes deadly serious the day a genuine hazard shows up and the system fails to react the way it was engineered to.
There are no optional steps when completing repairs. A calibration on a vehicle with incorrect alignment protects no one.

The whole industry is still catching up to computers on wheels. Plenty of mechanical shops are doing calibrations, plenty of glass shops set cameras, and the real question is how many are verifying alignment first.
